Real-world treatment patterns in ES‑SCLC highlight continued unmet medical need in the era of new therapies: ESSENCE Study
The study demonstrates that despite the introduction of new therapeutic agents, the majority of patients with extensive‑stage small cell lung cancer receive only one or two lines of therapy, underscoring a significant unmet medical need.
Using the Flatiron Health Panoramic database, the authors identified more than 13,000 adults in the United States diagnosed with extensive‑stage small cell lung cancer (ES‑SCLC) between 2019 and 2024. They examined real‑world treatment patterns, finding that nearly half of patients received only first‑line therapy, and just over one in five received both first‑ and second‑line treatments. Most patients began with platinum‑based chemotherapy combined with immunotherapy, while subsequent lines showed considerable heterogeneity, including the use of newer agents such as lurbinectedin and tarlatamab.
This research highlights the ongoing challenges and unmet needs for patients with ES‑SCLC, showing that most do not receive more than one or two lines of treatment and that there is no clear standard for later therapies. By mapping real‑world treatment patterns, the study identifies gaps where new treatments are most needed and can guide future research and drug development to improve outcomes for people facing this aggressive cancer.
