In a mouse model of pancreatic cancer, cells with oncogenic KRAS that enter an injury‑repair (plastic) state become trapped in a niche that suppresses immune activity, and can only progress to full cancer after tumor‑suppressor programs such as p53 are disabled.

This study identifies the injury‑repair state as a critical window before malignant transformation, suggesting that early therapeutic targeting of KRAS‑mutant plastic cells or the tumor‑supportive niche could halt or delay pancreatic cancer development.
