Advances in the medical management of esophageal cancer: an updated narrative review

Advances in systemic therapy, immunotherapy, and precision oncology hold promise for improving outcomes in both squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma of the esophagus.

This narrative review summarizes current and emerging advances in the diagnosis, genomics, systemic and targeted therapies, and precision medicine for esophageal cancer, with emphasis on the transformative impact of immunotherapy and novel molecular targeted agents.

Esophageal cancer remains a major global health burden with poor survival rates; therefore, integrating new therapeutic strategies—particularly immunotherapy and precision oncology—is essential to improve patient outcomes.
