Early clinical trial highlights cancer vaccines as potential affordable, safe and effective breast cancer treatment
A plasmid DNA vaccine encoding the ERBB2 (HER2) intracellular domain is safe and effective in patients with advanced HER2‑positive breast cancer.
An early phase I, nonrandomized clinical trial evaluated a plasmid DNA vaccine encoding the intracellular domain of ERBB2 (HER2) in 66 patients with advanced stage III or IV HER2‑positive breast cancer. The vaccine was well tolerated with only mild local and systemic reactions. At a 10‑year follow‑up, overall survival was approximately 85% and no stage III patients had disease recurrence, indicating promising safety and efficacy of this immunotherapeutic approach.
If validated in larger, randomized studies, this low‑cost, low‑toxicity vaccine could become a scalable and affordable treatment option that improves long‑term survival for aggressive breast cancer patients.
