Blood test shows promise for detecting breast cancer recurrence: Study
Patients who need cancer surgery are waiting longer for initial therapy, according to results of a retrospective cohort study.
A retrospective cohort of 150 breast‑cancer patients (105 primary, 45 recurrent) demonstrated that nucleosome‑based scores derived from cfDNA fragments (notably within the RERE and SYNPO2 loci) distinguish recurrent disease with an AUC of 0.826. Adding other cfDNA features in a machine‑learning model further improved recurrence prediction.
Early, non‑invasive detection of breast‑cancer recurrence can enable timely therapeutic intervention and personalized treatment, potentially improving survival and quality of life.
