A trial looking at proton beam radiotherapy for oesophageal cancer and gastroesophageal junction cancer (PROTIEUS)

Cancer research · Esophageal cancer

This trial is comparing to standard radiotherapy for food pipe cancer and cancer where the food pipe meets the stomach.

This Phase 2 clinical trial compares proton beam radiotherapy with standard radiotherapy in patients with oesophageal or gastroesophageal junction cancer that has not metastasized. The study aims to determine whether the highly focused proton therapy can improve tumour control and reduce side‑effects compared with conventional radiotherapy.

Advancing treatment options for oesophageal cancer may improve survival and quality of life, as current therapies are limited by toxicity and relatively low cure rates.
