Immunotherapy with pembrolizumab and decitabine may reshape the bone marrow microenvironment in relapsed or refractory acute myeloid leukemia patients, enhancing immune cell mobilization and potentially improving anti‑leukemic responses.

In a study published in Science Advances, researchers examined bone marrow from adults with relapsed or refractory AML treated with pembrolizumab and decitabine. Using single‑cell spatial transcriptomics, they observed changes in immune cell neighborhoods and communication patterns, indicating that immunotherapy can move immune cells closer to leukemia cells and may improve the immune response.

Understanding how immunotherapy remodels the bone marrow microenvironment could inform the design of more effective treatments for patients with relapsed AML, a disease where current therapies often fail.
