The study identifies high‑risk mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in the fallopian tube stroma that support initiation of high‑grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC) from serous tubal intraepithelial carcinoma (STIC) lesions. Implantation of high‑risk MSCs with fallopian tube cells in mice induced ovarian tumors and metastases, indicating that these MSCs may serve as a ‘soil’ for tumor development. This discovery opens avenues for early detection and preventive strategies in ovarian cancer, especially for women with BRCA mutations.
Ovarian cancer is frequently diagnosed at advanced stages with poor survival rates. Identifying high‑risk MSCs as a driver of tumor initiation offers a potential biomarker for early detection and a therapeutic target to prevent disease progression, particularly in high‑risk groups such as BRCA mutation carriers.
