ctDNA Detects Postsurgical Merkel Cell Recurrence
Posttreatment circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) positivity was associated with Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) recurrence and may help identify patients at a higher risk, a study suggested.
In a brief retrospective study of 36 Merkel cell carcinoma patients, 47.2% were ctDNA positive after surgery, and 14 of 17 ctDNA‑positive patients experienced recurrence. Median follow‑up was 48 months. The results indicate that post‑treatment ctDNA positivity correlates with recurrence and may serve as an early surveillance tool.
ctDNA testing may provide meaningful clinical value by enabling earlier detection of MCC recurrence and helping identify patients at higher risk, thereby informing follow‑up and treatment decisions.
