Gastric cancer treatment: recent progress and future perspectives

Perioperative chemotherapy has become the standard treatment for resectable gastric cancer.

Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the most common malignancies worldwide. Most patients are diagnosed at advanced stages due to subtle symptoms and low screening rates, and systemic therapies, including chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy, have evolved significantly in recent years. For resectable GC, perioperative chemotherapy has become the standard treatment, while for metastatic disease, advances in immunotherapy and biomarker-directed therapies such as PD‑L1, MSI, and HER2 are improving outcomes. Molecular diagnostics enable characterization of GC genetic profiles and identification of new targets. This review summarizes systemic treatment progress, individualised strategies, and future perspectives.

GC is a leading cause of cancer mortality; early detection and tailored therapy improve survival and quality of life. Identifying effective perioperative regimens and biomarkers informs personalized treatment decisions and reduces disease recurrence.
