Researchers from Monash University discovered that mature acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cells can revert to an immature state, challenging the prevailing view that leukemic maturation is irreversible. This reversible plasticity suggests that therapies targeting only leukemia‑stem cells may be insufficient, underscoring the need to eradicate all leukemic cells regardless of their maturation state.
The finding undermines therapeutic strategies limited to leukemia‑stem cells and highlights the necessity of eliminating both mature and immature leukemic cells, which may improve outcomes in AML treatment.
