Neighborhood Factors and Treatment Outcomes in Pediatric Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia: A REDIAL Consortium Report.
In this multicenter study, neither neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage nor residence in a Hispanic/Latino enclave was associated with inferiors outcomes among children with ALL after controlling for clinical and cytogenetic disease features.
This multicenter study examined whether neighborhood socioeconomic status (nSES) and residence in Hispanic enclaves were associated with treatment outcomes in children diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Using data from 2005–2017, the authors found that neither low nSES nor Hispanic enclave residence independently predicted end‑of‑induction minimal residual disease positivity, relapse, event‑free survival, or overall survival after adjusting for clinical and cytogenetic factors.
Understanding the influence of social determinants on childhood ALL outcomes informs targeted interventions to reduce disparities; these findings suggest that other factors, beyond neighborhood socioeconomic context, may drive observed outcome inequities.
