EAU 2023: 15-year Update ProtecT Trial - Part I: Oncology
Survival from clinically localized prostate cancer remains very high over a median of 15 years (96-97%), irrespective of treatment allocation.
The 15‑year outcomes of the PROstate TEsting for Cancer and Treatment (ProtecT) trial demonstrate that prostate cancer‑specific survival is comparable across active monitoring, radical prostatectomy, and radical radiotherapy, with overall 15‑year survival exceeding 96 %. Active monitoring can safely be applied to intermediate‑risk disease and the data argue against expanding population screening.
These results refine management of screen‑detected prostate cancer by confirming that aggressive treatment offers no survival advantage over active monitoring, thereby informing decisions on screening, surveillance, and treatment intensity.
