Screening for Thyroid Cancer: US Preventive Services Task Force Recommendation Statement

Rákkutatás · Thyroid cancer

The USPSTF recommends against screening for thyroid cancer in asymptomatic adults, concluding the net benefit is negative.

This USPSTF statement revises prior guidance on thyroid cancer screening. Review of the literature found inadequate direct evidence of benefit yet moderate direct evidence of harm—particularly from overdiagnosis and overtreatment—leading to a negative net benefit and a recommendation against screening asymptomatic adults.

Screening has led to a rise in thyroid cancer incidence without reducing mortality and is associated with significant harms such as unnecessary surgery and treatment for indolent disease.
