An AI Approach to Differentiating Lung Squamous Cell Carcinoma From Metastases of Other Origins
The study demonstrates that an artificial intelligence–assisted approach can identify a subset of cases submitted as lung squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) that are actually metastases from other tissue origins, thereby preventing misdiagnosis and facilitating appropriate therapy selection.
Accurate determination of the tissue of origin in squamous cell carcinomas is essential because therapeutic regimens and prognostic outcomes differ markedly between primary lung SCC and metastatic SCC from other sites.
