UCSF Liver Cancer Trial: National Liver Cancer Screening Trial
The National Liver Cancer Screening Trial is an adaptive randomized phase IV trial comparing ultrasound-based versus biomarker-based (GALAD) screening to reduce late‑stage hepatocellular carcinoma in patients with cirrhosis or chronic hepatitis B.
This phase IV randomized trial will enroll 5,500 adults with cirrhosis or chronic hepatitis B and compare semi‑annual ultrasound plus alpha‑fetoprotein screening with semi‑annual GALAD biomarker screening to determine whether the biomarker strategy reduces the proportion of late‑stage hepatocellular carcinoma and ultimately improves survival.
If GALAD screening proves superior, it could enable earlier detection of hepatocellular carcinoma, potentially lowering mortality and informing nationwide screening guidelines.
