Colorectal cancer research reveals new mechanism in targeted therapy against metastasis
Targeting EGFR in myeloid cells modulates the tumor microenvironment and contributes to the therapeutic effect of anti‑EGFR therapy in metastatic colorectal cancer.
Researchers at the Medical University of Vienna discovered that EGFR signaling in myeloid cells promotes a tumor‑suppressive microenvironment in metastatic colorectal cancer, and that silencing EGFR in these immune cells slows tumour growth and reduces immunosuppressive macrophages. This suggests that anti‑EGFR therapies act partly via immune modulation, not only by targeting tumour cells.
Understanding that anti‑EGFR drugs modulate the immune microenvironment opens new avenues for combination therapies and biomarker development, potentially improving outcomes for patients with metastatic colorectal cancer.
