Gemcitabine and cisplatin induction chemotherapy in nasopharyngeal carcinoma
Induction chemotherapy with gemcitabine and cisplatin added to chemoradiotherapy significantly improved recurrence‑free survival and overall survival compared with chemoradiotherapy alone among patients with locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma.
In a phase‑3 randomized trial, induction chemotherapy with gemcitabine (1 g/m² days 1 and 8) plus cisplatin (80 mg/m² day 1, every 3 weeks) plus concurrent chemoradiotherapy improved 3‑year recurrence‑free survival (85.3 % vs 76.5 %) and overall survival (94.6 % vs 90.3 %) compared with concurrent chemoradiotherapy alone in patients with locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma.
These findings support the use of gemcitabine‑based induction chemotherapy as standard care for locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma, potentially improving survival outcomes.
