The study led by the University of Birmingham and Nonacus Ltd found that GALEAS Bladder detected 71 of 77 cancers (92.2%) among nearly 1,000 patients, including every muscle‑invasive bladder cancer and 35 of 36 high‑grade cancers.
The study of 964 patients across seven NHS urology departments evaluated the GALEAS Bladder urine test for detecting bladder cancer and found it detected 71 of 77 cancers (92.2%) overall, including all 17 muscle‑invasive cancers (100%) and 35 of 36 high‑grade cancers (97.2%). A negative result was associated with a 99.3% probability of not having bladder cancer, and 100% negative predictive value in patients with non‑visible haematuria.
The test can help clinicians decide which patients require urgent cystoscopy and which can safely defer the procedure, potentially reducing the burden on urology departments while maintaining high diagnostic accuracy.
