Acute myeloid leukemia increasingly impacting older adults globally
The study reports a rising incidence, prevalence, mortality, and disability‑adjusted life years for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) among adults 60 and older, with projections to increase further by 2050.
Among adults aged ≥60 years, AML incidence, prevalence, mortality, and disability‑adjusted life years increased from 1990‑2021 and are projected to rise through 2050. Burden was highest in men, increased with age, and was greater in high‑sociodemographic‑index settings. Population growth and modifiable exposures, including smoking, high BMI, benzene, and formaldehyde, contributed substantially.
These findings carry significant clinical and public health implications, providing clear entry points for primary prevention—weight control, smoking cessation, and occupational protection—while highlighting the need for health care systems to prepare for cancer prevention and treatment in an aging population.
