GORTEC Announces New Trial Success for Head and Neck Cancer Treatment

Cancer research · Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma

Cetuximab is inferior to cisplatin regarding locoregional control for concomitant treatment with RT in patients with locoregionally advanced HNSCC.

The randomized Phase 3 NIVOPOSTOP GORTEC 2018‑01 trial evaluated the addition of nivolumab to standard‑of‑care radiotherapy and cisplatin versus standard‑of‑care alone in patients with high‑risk locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck. The study demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in disease‑free survival (DFS) with nivolumab, with a safety profile consistent with prior studies.

This result provides evidence that nivolumab can improve disease‑free survival in high‑risk LA‑SCCHN patients, potentially establishing a new standard for adjuvant therapy and improving long‑term outcomes for this aggressive disease.
