De‑implementation of cytogenetics in ALL in favor of clinical genomics was successful at SJCRH.
The adoption of clinical genomics at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital led to the de‑implementation of routine conventional cytogenetics for diagnosing pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in 2018. A qualitative study mapped the decision‑making process and identified facilitators, barriers, and lessons learned, concluding that the transition to genomics was successful and improved resource allocation, workflow efficiency, and patient classification without adverse impact on outcomes.
Removing redundant diagnostics can reduce costs, shorten turnaround, and improve precision medicine for pediatric ALL.
