Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer. In early stages it can be treated successfully with surgery alone, but after metastasis survival rates drop dramatically. Early and correct diagnosis is therefore critical for the best prognosis. Misdiagnosis of melanoma is a leading cause of malpractice claims. While several new drugs have improved outcomes in metastatic melanoma over the past decade, most patients do not achieve lasting responses, underscoring the need for new biomarkers and drug targets to enhance diagnostic accuracy and therapeutic effectiveness.
Improving early detection and targeted treatment of melanoma is essential to reduce mortality, prevent malpractice claims, and increase the proportion of patients who achieve durable remission from metastatic disease.
