Literature Review The Multitalented Marvels: Exploring the Versatile Potential of Natural Products in Osteosarcoma Treatment
Osteosarcoma (OS) is a malignant neoplasm arising from bone tissue.
Natural products (NPs) have been identified as promising anti‑cancer agents across multiple malignancies. In osteosarcoma (OS), NPs such as polyphenols, alkaloids and terpenoids have shown pre‑clinical efficacy in reducing tumour growth, inhibiting metastasis, and overcoming chemoresistance. This comprehensive review surveys experimental evidence from 2015‑2025, summarises mechanistic pathways including modulation of m6A epigenetic regulators, exosome‑mediated signalling, and tumour‑microenvironment interactions, and discusses translational obstacles and the paucity of clinical data. A registered Phase II trial (NCT04319874) combines Ganoderma lucidum spore powder with doxorubicin and cisplatin in post‑operative OS patients, underscoring the urgent need for larger, rigorously designed clinical studies.
OS is a highly aggressive bone tumour with a high propensity for lung metastasis and limited therapeutic benefit from conventional chemotherapy, especially in metastatic disease. Identifying natural compounds that can inhibit OS progression and reverse chemoresistance could improve survival and reduce treatment‑related toxicity.
