VEGFR Inhibitors Show Strong Pancreatic Tumor Control in Metastatic Kidney Cancer Study
A retrospective study of 119 pancreatic metastases from metastatic clear‑cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) found that vascular endothelial growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors (VEGFR‑TKIs), particularly axitinib in combination with pembrolizumab, produced the greatest tumor shrinkage (median 54%) and longest time to progression (median not reached) compared with VEGFR‑TKI monotherapy or immune‑checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) combinations. The study shows that pancreatic or thyroid metastases may respond better to VEGFR‑TKIs than to ICIs alone, though no cancer‑specific survival advantage was observed.
The findings suggest that adding a VEGFR‑TKI to standard first‑line therapy for metastatic clear‑cell renal cell carcinoma patients with pancreatic metastases can provide superior local tumor control and extend progression‑free survival without improving overall survival, highlighting a potential therapeutic strategy for this rare metastatic presentation.
