New Therapies Approved for Multiple Myeloma

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a malignant plasma cell disorder that accounts for about 1% of all cancers. Over the last decade, several pharmacologic agents—including proteasome inhibitors, immunomodulatory drugs, and novel monoclonal antibodies—have been approved, markedly improving patient outcomes. In 2015, the FDA approved four novel agents—panobinostat, ixazomib, elotuzumab, and daratumumab—for the treatment of relapsed MM, potentially offering the hope of improved survival.
These approvals represent a significant advance in therapeutic options for patients with relapsed and refractory multiple myeloma, expanding choices that can improve progression‑free and overall survival.
