Stool and vaginal microbiome profiles patterns among Black and White endometrial cancer survivors: A pilot study in North Carolina

Cancer research · Endometrial cancer

Self‑collection of stool and vaginal microbiome samples is feasible and acceptable in cancer survivors.

Endometrial cancer survivors may experience changes in microbiome due to cancer treatment and other factors. This pilot study evaluated potential variation in stool and vaginal microbiome communities and assessed the feasibility and acceptability of self‑sampling among 50 endometrial cancer survivors. Self‑collected vaginal and stool samples were mailed and analyzed by 16S rRNA sequencing. Findings indicate that self‑collection is feasible and acceptable, and that radiation and chemotherapy are associated with decreased Lactobacillus abundance and increased vaginal microbial diversity.

Patients and clinicians need to know that non‑invasive, at‑home sampling can reliably capture microbiome data, enabling larger epidemiologic studies and personalized interventions for endometrial cancer survivors.
