Expert consensus on the role of immunotherapy in nasopharyngeal carcinoma: clinical and economic perspectives from the GCC region
Toripalimab in combination with chemotherapy should be adopted as the new standard of care for recurrent or metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma (RM‑NPC).
This position paper reviews the evolving role of immunotherapy in recurrent or metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma (RM‑NPC), with a particular emphasis on the checkpoint inhibitor toripalimab. It summarizes clinical trial outcomes, guideline recommendations, and economic evaluations relevant to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region, and proposes adopting toripalimab plus chemotherapy as the new standard of care for RM‑NPC.
Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) imposes a disproportionate clinical and economic burden in endemic GCC areas. Current therapies are limited and associated with high toxicity. Introducing toripalimab combined with chemotherapy can improve survival, reduce toxicity, and enhance health system efficiency, thereby improving patient access and value-based care.
