Cervical Cancer Overview
Infection of the cervix with human papillomavirus (HPV) is almost always the cause of cervical cancer.
Cervical cancer usually develops slowly over time, often following dysplastic changes in cervical cells. Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is almost always the cause, with most cases preventable through Pap tests and HPV vaccines.
Early detection via Pap tests and prevention via HPV vaccination dramatically reduce incidence and mortality.
