High-risk neuroblastoma: targeted therapy could be used in first line treatment - Institut Curie
Because ALK can be targeted therapeutically, this study makes a compelling case for the introduction of ALK inhibitors in the initial treatment of high‑risk neuroblastoma patients with alterations in this gene.
An international study carried out by the SIOPEN consortium and published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology demonstrates that ALK gene alterations (mutation or amplification) are present in ~14 % and ~4 % of newly diagnosed high‑risk neuroblastoma patients, respectively, and that these alterations are associated with a lower overall survival. Because ALK can be targeted therapeutically, the authors argue that ALK inhibitors should be introduced at diagnosis for patients with ALK‑positive disease.
ALK‑positive high‑risk neuroblastoma has a poorer prognosis and represents a suitable target for the first‑line use of ALK inhibitors, potentially improving survival.
