New maintenance treatment for acute myeloid leukemia prolongs the lives of patients
Oral azacitidine maintenance therapy improves overall survival and prolongs remission in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) who have achieved remission after induction chemotherapy, as demonstrated in a randomized, international phase‑3 clinical trial.
The QUAZAR AML‑001 phase‑3 randomized trial demonstrated that oral azacitidine at 300 mg for two weeks every month significantly prolonged relapse‑free survival (median 10.2 months vs 4.8 months) and overall survival (median 24.7 months vs 14.8 months) in patients with AML in first remission, improving the percentage alive at two years from 37.1 % to 50.6 %.
This study establishes the first evidence‑based maintenance therapy that improves survival in AML beyond induction chemotherapy, supporting its adoption as standard care and changing the post‑remission treatment paradigm for this high‑risk leukemia.
