Cervical cancer is the fifth most common malignancy in women worldwide and the fourth leading cause of cancer‑related death, particularly in developing countries. The disease results almost exclusively from persistent high‑risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, and its incidence has declined in developed nations due to widespread Pap screening and HPV vaccination. Global efforts aim to eliminate cervical cancer by 2030 through vaccination, screening and treatment of precancerous lesions.
The high burden of cervical cancer, especially in low‑resource settings, drives international public health initiatives to reduce incidence and mortality through prevention, early detection, and treatment.
