Overcoming immune evasion: a new combination therapy advances treatment for a rare metastatic eye cancer
The average survival in our study was 35 months, which compares favorably to the reported survival rates in most modern trials in this disease.
Metastatic uveal melanoma is a rare cancer of the eye that almost always spreads to the liver, where the strong immune tolerance allows the cancer to grow undetected. Conventional immunotherapies that work for cutaneous melanoma are ineffective in uveal melanoma because the immune cells in the eye and liver are difficult to reactivate. The study shows that a liver‑directed transarterial immunoembolization (TAIE) combined with a systemic immune checkpoint inhibitor can achieve disease control in 10 of 18 patients, with an average survival of 35 months—much longer than the typical 10 months for this disease—suggesting a powerful synergy that could form the basis of next‑generation therapies for metastatic uveal melanoma.
